About Me

profile
Books are my passion! I’ve been reading them since I was a kid, selling them since I was sixteen (2002), and writing them since 2011. My favorite genre is fantasy, but I definitely indulge in my fair share of young adult, science fiction and urban fantasy. I’ve read quite a bit more than your average person, and love to share feedback on great books with both my customers and online following. That’s why I wanted to start blog that focuses on reviewing and recommending speculative fiction titles for those who are in need of some seriously good reading.
.
Books have been my life since my tenth grade teacher asked me to pick a career path. I had the brilliant idea that I was going to run a bookstore one day, so I enrolled in as many business classes as I could, then went out the next week and applied for a job at B. Dalton Bookstore. Twelve years with the company later, with an MBA in hand that almost cost me my sanity, I’ve put my plans to sell books on the side in favor of my new (and even more brilliant) plan to write them. I’m currently working on my first novel – and yes, it’s about dragons. :)

Oh, and meet my pup, Rory.

Authors/Publishers: All requests can be sent to nikihawkes13@hotmail.com. I have a lot of things vying for my attention these days, so please only email me if you have a title that fits my specific genre interests (scifi/fantasy). Taking a page from Cal Newport’s book (Deep Work), I’ll only respond to the request which align with my current interests, schedule, and workload. Best of luck on your writing journey.

  1. Hi,
I was wondering if you accept unsolicited review requests? I’m a new author who is looking for someone to review my book. My blog address is avgriffin.wordpress.com.
By the way, I love dragons too. :)

    • Hi Avery,
I don’t usually take review requests, and I regret to say I have a few too many projects of my own going on right now to take another. I’m incredibly flattered, though, and if things lighten up I’ll get back to you. I followed your blog so I’d be able to find you. :-) Good luck getting your work out there – finishing the book is an amazing accomplishment!

  3. Hello Nikki. I probably asked you this before but may I interest you in reviewing my book Curse Breaker: Guild Assassin? Feel free to say no. But if you do say yes let me know and I’ll try to get you an ebook copy to review.

    • Possibly, but I am really sorry to say that I don’t accept book review solicitations, although I’m flattered you consider my blog a good match for your work. Seriously, though, great job at writing a book – I know how much blood sweat and tears it takes and it’s no small feat!

  4. not as well read as you, but probably far more obsessed when it comes to dragons. have you read Elizabeth Kerner? Susan Fletcher? Steven Brust? Jeffery A Carver? (the dragon rigger books) … DJ Conway? (for some non-fction ideas about dragons) gimmie a jingle if you haven’t read any of these. I could probably pick my brain for some other good dragon books too. -azurethi/TahAnenNah

    • Anyone who has a dragon obsession gets two thumbs up in my book. :) I’ve read (and loved) Stephen Brust, have had Kerner and Fletcher on my shelves for years, and have in fact NOT heard of the other two – thank you for the recommends!! My favorites are the Obsidian Trilogy by Watt-Evans and Dragon Jousters by Mercedes Lackey, although the list goes on and on. Between the two of us, we have probably read all the good ones, don’t you think? :)
