Nik’s Notes:

Those of you familiar with the Forgotten Realms empire are probably aware of the dozens of spinoff novels spawned by the highly successful Drizzt books of R.A. Salvatore. His latest novel, The Companions, is the beginning of a new such spinoff. This means the next three book in the series are written by different authors, and are essentially stand-alones. This first book is the only one containing the “companions” that we have all come to know and love, so I’m not totally sure it’s one I want to read, but I’ll probably break down and pick it up anyway out of nostalgia.

Here’s a look at the next three books in the series and their release dates:

Nik’s Notes:

I admit that I am shamelessly swayed by covers. The series was barely on my radar, but it’s excellent cover artwork, especially the latest, is one of the main reasons I’m going to read them. Because some people don’t see that as a compelling reason to pick up a book, I will say that the story line sounds like a lot of fun. It is an adventure in the same category as Brandon Mull’s Candy Shop Wars and is incidentally published by the same company (Shadow Mountain). That publisher hasn’t let me down yet, so here’s hoping it’s as good as I think it’ll be. Has anybody else read these yet?

Nik’s Notes:

The release of Revealed will put me three books behind in this series. I really enjoyed the first four or so but they kind of lost me after book 6. I liked them enough to eventually finish the series but I’ve decided to wait until they are all released (I will probably plow through them over the weekend or during a vacation – they do make excellent beach reads). The bad news with that plan – I’ll have to wait another couple of years as there are currently 15 books planned for the series.

Is anybody else up to date? I’m curious to know if they got better after I stopped reading.

Nik’s Notes:

I know quite a few people who are eagerly awaiting the conclusion to this trilogy. It is considered the perfect substitute for those who liked Hunger Games and Divergent… perfect for the dystopian-obsessed like me. Even though a couple of people have recommended it to me, I haven’t read yet – but that’s is about to change. Legend is next on my list and I couldn’t be more excited. I have a feeling I’m going to be kicking myself for not waiting a little longer once I get to the end of Prodigy and have to wait until November for the conclusion.

Coming Soon: Perdition by Ann Aguirre

8.27Title: Perdition

Author: Ann Aguirre

Series: The Dred Chronicles #1

Genre: Science Fiction

Release Date: August 27, 2013

The Overview: The prison ship Perdition, a floating city where the Conglomerate’s most dangerous criminals are confined for life, orbits endlessly around a barren asteroid.
Life inside is even more bleak. Hailed as the Dread Queen, inmate Dresdemona “Dred” Devos controls one of Perdition’s six territories, bordered on both sides by would-be kings eager to challenge her claim. Keeping them at bay requires constant vigilance, as well as a steady influx of new recruits to replace the fallen. Survival is a constant battle, and death is the only escape.

Of the newest convicts, only one is worth Dred’s attention. The mercenary Jael, with his deadly gaze and attitude, may be the most dangerous criminal onboard. His combat skill could give her the edge she needs, if he doesn’t betray her first. Unfortunately, that’s what he does best. Winning Jael’s allegiance will be a challenge, but failure could be worse than death…

Nik’s Notes:

I actually mourned when I found out that Endgame was Aguirre’s last Sirantha Jax book. I enjoyed it so much that I’ve already got plans to read it again within the next year (and with the current size of my TBR pile, that is a huge commitment). I had no idea she was going to do a spinoff series, and I think I actually squealed when I found out. This author is fantastic, and must-read for any science fiction and urban fantasy fan. In all seriousness, this is the book release I am most excited about between now and the end of the year…she’s that good.

Out This Month – Noteworthy Releases June 2013!

cccc2These are, in my opinion, the best of the best book releases in June. There aren’t very many teen books this month, which is a contrasts to the last few months where it seems like I was struggling to include a good fantasy. My favorite release is Gameboard of the Gods by Richelle Mead, but as I’ve already read it, I am most excited to pick up The Human by Keary Taylor. Are any of them on your list?
