Your Pick for Nik! – June’s Nominations!

To cast your vote, just leave a comment indicating your chosen titles (up to 3) – and may the best book win!

It’s that time again for us to pick our next book! I want to give a special thanks to all of you who nominated titles for June’s Selection – I’m astounded at how many titles I really want to read – phenomenal picks!

Voting starts today (June 13, 2013) and will remain open until Sunday the 19th (Remember: YOU CAN VOTE FOR MORE THAN 1).

For those of you new to the book club, Your Pick for Nik! is a monthly feature where I turn over control of my reading list to you!

Here’s how it works: I will nominate titles from my TBR list (or, at least for this month, YOU nominated the titles) and you will choose which one gets featured. It can be one you’ve already read and want to discuss, one you want to read but wish to see my feedback on first, or – and this is my favorite part – you can read it along with me!

Depicted below are the top 10 nominations I received. Simply vote for your favorites, and let the best book win! At 10:00 am (MST) on Monday the 2oth I will announce the winner. Come the end of June, I will post a thorough review of the chosen title – and hopefully find out what you thought of it as well!

So without further ado…

Pressia is on the run.

He claims to have her best interests at heart, but Eris soon discovers that her charming rescuer has a hidden agenda. As they race across the galaxy, outrunning a villainous figure from Varrin’s past, Eris begins to realize that their relationship is putting her planet, her life and her heart in imminent danger. q6Title: Paranormalcy

q7Title: Invisibility

Author: Andrea Cremer

Genre: Teen Paranormal Romance

So when Elizabeth moves to Stephen’s NYC apartment building from Minnesota, no one is more surprised than he is that she can see him. A budding romance ensues, and when Stephen confides in Elizabeth about his predicament, the two of them decide to dive headfirst into the secret world of cursecasters and spellseekers to figure out a way to break the curse. But things don’t go as planned, especially when Stephen’s grandfather arrives in town, taking his anger out on everyone he sees. In the end, Elizabeth and Stephen must decide how big of a sacrifice they’re willing to make for Stephen to become visible — because the answer could mean the difference between life and death. At least for Elizabeth.

q7Title: Sabriel

Author: Garth Nix

Genre: Teen Fantasy

Overview: Sent to a boarding school in Ancelstierre as a young child, Sabriel has had little experience with the random power of Free Magic or the Dead who refuse to stay dead in the Old Kingdom. But during her final semester, her father, the Abhorsen, goes missing, and Sabriel knows she must enter the Old Kingdom to find him. She soon finds companions in Mogget, a cat whose aloof manner barely conceals its malevolent spirit, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage long imprisoned by magic, now free in body but still trapped by painful memories. As the three travel deep into the Old Kingdom, threats mount on all sides. And every step brings them closer to a battle that will pit them against the true forces of life and death — and bring Sabriel face-to-face with her own hidden destiny. With “Sabriel,” the first installment in the Abhorsen trilogy, Garth Nix exploded onto the fantasy scene as a rising star, in a novel that takes readers to a world where the line between the living and the dead isn’t always clear — and sometimes disappears altogether.

  1. OMG…everyone picked some good books. Made it hard to chose. There are three I would really like to read. Here are my choices in reading preference order:
    1. The 5th Wave
    2. Pure
    3. Throne of Glass
Thank you all and thank you Niki!

  2. You got good picks!
    1. Pure
    2.Clockwork Angel
    3. Legend
(I would have said the 5th Wave, but I know there is no way I will be able to get that from the library by the end of June…)

  3. 5th Wave, since its the new big title.
Paranormalcy, since Janae says it is the best book ever, and has been telling me to read it for forever. And..
Hitchhiker’s Guide since Kory says it is the best book ever and I promised to read it a long time ago… :)

  4. Sabriel was okay… Have read a lot like it, so it didn’t really stand out to me like I had expected based on many people’s comments to me about it. I hear Pure is fantastic – the next Hunger Games? I think your voting is closed though? You wrote June 13, think you meant May.

    • Why yes, I did mean May, lol. Thanks for catching that! I’m probably going to give Sabriel a try within the next couple of weeks… It’s been collecting dust on my shelf for like ten years now. As for Pure, it has come in second for like five months in a row now so I might just forego the voting next month and just declare it the next pick.
Glad to see you’re still around – for what it’s worth, I miss reading your reviews. :)

      • Thank you! Life is tough and reviews have taken a back burner for now. I will get back to them with a fury though. Just need time :)

      • Not sure if you follow my writing. I posted a couple short stories/chapters recently and would love criticism. The harsher the better… thick skin.

      • Cool, I didn’t know you wrote – I would be happy to provide some feedback! I’ll come check it out sometime soon. I have fairly thick skin too – I find it’s essential to have if you really want your writing to develop into something fantastic.
