This week, I’m paying homage to the books that sparked my love of reading. Without them, I doubt I would have grown up to be The Obsessive Bookseller I am today. I owe them for introducing me to my passion in life.
Top Ten Childhood Books I’m Thankful For!
- Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede
- Help! I’m Trapped in Obedience School Again by Todd Strasser
- Outcast of Redwall by Brian Jacques
- Shadows in the Water by Kathryn Lasky
- The BFG by Roald Dahl
- The Boys Start the War/The Girls Get Even by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
- The Call of the Wild by Jack London
- The Castle in the Attick by Elizabeth Winthrop
- The Invasion by K. A. Applegate
- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J. K. Rowling
Most of these books kept me entertained a dozen times over – when I was younger we lived almost two hours from the nearest bookstore, so I reread these books until they were falling apart. Some of them I would challenge myself to read cover to cover every day… It was a lot of fun. :-)
What books sparked your love of reading as a kid?
Awesome topic choice! I don’t know many of these but I agree with Potter! From Dahl I read Matilda and I absolutely adored it. :)
Happy reading!

I always love seeing MG books! I feel like they’re so much less prominent in the blogosphere than YA and Adult books. I’m a bookseller too! Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Harry Potter and Animorphs would definitely make my list as well. Ditto for Roald Dahl, though Matilda was my favourite.
