It’s once again time for my favorite feature: Tackling the TBR! There’s nothing I love more than picking out which books to read next, and this slightly organized method of reading has really amped my enjoyment to the next level. Bring on the mantras!
Read the best books first.
&
Life is too short to read books you’re not enjoying.
However you put together your TBR for the next month, the goal is to reduce the amount of obligation in reading and increase the fun.
Here’s a look at how the system works:
1. Identify the titles that take top priority in your TBR.
2. Combine them all in your own Tackling the TBR post.
3. Throughout the month pick from that pile as the mood strikes you.
Here’s what mine looks like:
December 2016 TBR Tackler Shelf:
- [March 7, 2017] Silence Fallen by Patricia Briggs
- Babylon’s Ashes by James S. A. Corey
- Gauntlygrym by R.A. Salvatore
- The Obelisk Gate by N.K. Jemison
- Blood Cross by Faith Hunter
- Twisted Citadel by Sara Douglass
- United by Melissa Landers
- A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab
- [July 25, 2017] Vanguard by Ann Aguirre
- Academ’s Fury by Jim Butcher
No doubt about it – Silence Fallen by Patricia Briggs is the highest priority on this month’s Tackler Shelf (I’m so excited!). I have a lot more 500+ pages fantasy this month, so I doubt I’ll be able to make it through more than half of these titles.
Tackler Carry-overs:
- Bad Blood by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
- Long Game by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
- Magic Strikes by Ilona Andrews
- Magic Bleeds by Ilona Andrews
- The Leopard King by Ann Aguirre
I decided to expand my TBR tackler selection list to include titles on previous Tackling the TBR posts that I either didn’t have a chance to get to or am currently part way through. It gives me a more accurate snapshot of my progress over time and more potential high-priority titles to choose from each month. I’ve already started 3 of the 5 carryovers on the list. :-)
Feel free to share your versions of how you manage your TBR pile (and the links to your posts if applicable) in the comments. Maybe we can help make each other’s systems even better. :)
What books are you Tackling this month?
Looking forward to your eventual reviews of both Babylon’s Ashes and Academ’s Fury.

I just finished my reading plan for 2017 the other day and am really excited to start it! Though I have a lot of reading I still need to finish for this year…
One of my goals for next year is to read 25 novels from the last 5 years. It breaks down to 5 books that were published per year. This year I was so focused on reading books from my eReader and updating older series that I didn’t read too many “new” to me series. So I can’t wait to dive in!

What an awesome challenge – I’m excited to see which 25 novels you’ve chosen. I was looking at my Goodreads statistics the other day, and was surprised to discover that most of what I read has been published within the last 5 to 10 years. I thought I was a little more old-school than that ha ha. My goal for next year is similar to what your goal for this year was, finishing series: I’ve made some good progress this year, but want to make it official going forward. :-) I can’t wait to see your 2017 goals post!
