in the after lightTitle: In the After Light

Author: Alexandra Bracken

Series: Darkest Minds #3

Genre: Teen Dystopian

Release Date: October 28, 2014

The OverviewRuby can’t look back. Fractured by an unbearable loss, she and the kids who survived the government’s attack on Los Angeles travel north to regroup. With them is a prisoner: Clancy Gray, son of the president, and one of the few people Ruby has encountered with abilities like hers. Only Ruby has any power over him, and just one slip could lead to Clancy wreaking havoc on their minds. They are armed only with a volatile secret: proof of a government conspiracy to cover up the real cause of IANN, the disease that has killed most of America’s children and left Ruby and others like her with powers the government will kill to keep contained. But internal strife may destroy their only chance to free the “rehabilitation camps” housing thousands of other Psi kids. Meanwhile, reunited with Liam, the boy she would-and did-sacrifice everything for to keep alive, Ruby must face the painful repercussions of having tampered with his memories of her. She turns to Cole, his older brother, to provide the intense training she knows she will need to take down Gray and the government. But Cole has demons of his own, and one fatal mistake may be the spark that sets the world on fire.

I don’t know about you, but I’m incredibly interested to see how this trilogy wraps up. I love the whole concept behind this series and especially love the effortless voice in which it was written. My favorite part of the series so far are the incredibly lovable side characters. Ruby is a great protagonist, but her sidekicks really do steal the show, and I am most excited to see where they wind up. October can’t come too soon! :-)

May 2014: Review Recap!

Review Recap

This was a fantastic month of reviews on The Obsessive Bookseller, as all of the books featured were rated three stars or higher. Having finally caught up with all of my “obligatory” reading (i.e. all of those digital ARCs I selfishly requested back in February), I finally am able to pick up the books that entice me the most… and there were some good ones:

Dragon’s Blood by Jane Yolen – 4.5/5 stars

The Immortal Crown by Richelle Mead – 5/5 stars!

City of Dragons by Robin Hobb – 5/5 stars!

The Selection Stories by Kiera Cass – 4/5 stars

The One by Kiera Cass – 3/5 stars

After the End by Amy Plum – 3.5/5 stars

And my favorite:

Not a drop to drink

Not a Drop to Drink by Mindy McGinnis – 4.5/5 stars

I have to say, The Immortal Crown almost got the number one spot, but McGinnis’ book was just too awesome to ignore (and that’s saying something, considering Mead is my favorite author)!

Despite some underwhelming (but totally justified) reviews I’ve read about Pawn on the blogosphere, I enjoyed the snot out of it. In fact, it was one of my favorite books read in 2013 and I even made a point of purchasing it in hardcover. I loved it because, even though the society’s setup wasn’t totally feasible, I loved the basic concept – especially the way it meshed meshed with a game of chess. I also really enjoyed the writing style and was absorbed from the first page. In any case, I will definitely be on the hunt for this come November!

I am on a Selection craze and have been since I picked up the first book over a year ago. As I’m currently savoring The One (the final book in the trilogy) I find myself incredibly sad that the story is coming to an end. This makes me even more excited to check out The Queen when it comes out in December – I simply cannot get enough of this series. Aside from my obsession, I find Amberly’s selection journey to be just as curious as America’s and look forward to finding out more about her. She’s easily  one of my favorite characters!

Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, and serving her kingdom just as she’s always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn’t go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics – and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.

I’m really fired up about this book – it looks to have everything I love about high fantasy – all wrapped up in an appealing YA package. It’s supposed to be similar to Game of Thrones, and while I had some issues with that series (the details of which I’ll spare you here) I think the premise of Snow Like Ashes sounds highly interesting. If I can’t manage to get my hands on an early copy of this baby, you’d better believe I’m picking one up the day it comes out! :)

witch with no name 2

Hosted by Breaking the Spine

I pick up Kim Harrison’s books when I need a guaranteed good read. I take my time with them – savoring every last page and, because of that, am a few books behind in the series. Even so, I dread the day it comes to an end – these books have struck me so profoundly that I will really miss them when they’re done (not that I couldn’t go back and reread, but I will miss the considerable discovery process that makes them so much fun to read). As The Witch With No Name comes out in just a few months, that day is approaching a lot faster than I had anticipated. Because I’ve taken my time, I have a bit more reading to do than the average Hollows fan before I’m ready to pickup the conclusion, but I can’t imagine it being any less than epic when I do! If you like urban fantasy and haven’t read Kim Harrison yet, you are missing out on one of my absolute favorites!
