Suddenly the paths of these children – and the world – have been changed for ever. Enter the world of Erdas, where every child who comes of age must discover if they have a spirit animal, a rare bond between human and beast that bestows great powers to both. The Review:

I want to start off by saying I love this author. He perfectly encapsulates the wonders of fantasy while reminding us how much fun it was to be a kid. He manages to do both of these things without sacrificing the quality of his writing (which keeps adult readers engaged and gives a healthy challenge to the younger ones). I am a huge sucker for fantasy books involving animals – after all, it was the Animorphs series by K.A. Applegate and the Redwall series by Brian Jacques that initially sparked my love of reading. So the idea of having my favorite kids author (aside from JK Rowling) tackle an animal story was the best news ever.

I was anticipating a robust, full-length novel… what I got was something slightly different. Turns out, it’s the first installment of a multi-platform series, sort of like The 39 Clues and The Infinity Ring. Brandon Mull wrote this first book and outlined the next five books, but other authors will tell those tales. While cool in its own right, it’s not exactly what I had in mind.

Even though it was different than I’d hoped, it was still a dang good (albeit quick) read. I especially loved the diverse range of characters – there was someone for everyone to root for, giving it a sort of global appeal. All the characters had compelling individual stories but also played really well off of one another – they were my favorite components in the book, and I’m really looking forward to seeing where their journey take them next.

The magic system was also a strong point – I love the magic involved with getting a spirit animal and the benefits that came from having one. The concept was just plain fun. Because it’s a multi platform book, you can read it then go join the adventure online – earning a Spirit Animal for yourself as you help recover the hidden talismans. Sounds like fun, right? I’m probably going to sign in just to see what my animal would be…

Overall, Wild Born was a great adventure that started out with a bang and didn’t let up the entire way through.

Recommended Reading: for those looking for fantasy adventure, excitement, and a whole lot of animal awesomeness! And, of course, for fans of Brandon Mull.

17332969Title: The 100

Author: Kass Morgan

Series: The Hundred #1

Genre: Teen Science Fiction

Overview: In the future, humans live in city-like spaceships orbiting far above Earth’s toxic atmosphere. No one knows when, or even if, the long-abandoned planet will be habitable again. After a brutal crash landing, the teens arrive on a savagely beautiful planet they’ve only seen from space. Confronting the dangers of this rugged new world, they struggle to form a tentative community. But they’re haunted by their past and uncertain about the future. To survive, they must learn to trust – and even love – again.

Why it’s Nominated: from the excerpt alone, I’m intrigued. It’s not quite like anything I’ve read before and to top it off, it’s going to be a TV series on the CW.

7165405Title: The Ambassador’s Mission

Author: Trudi Canavan

Series: The Trader’s’ Spy #1

Genre: Fantasy

Overview: Sonea, a Black Magician of Kyralia, is horrified when her son, Lorkin, volunteers to assist the new Guild Ambassador to Sachaka. When word comes that Lorkin has gone missing, Sonea is desperate to find him, but if she leaves the city she will be exiled forever. And besides, an old friend is in need of her help. Most of her friend’s family has been murdered – the latest in a long line of assassinations to plague the leading Thieves of the city. There has always been rivalry, but now the Thieves are waging a deadly underworld war, and it appears they have been doing so with magical assistance.

Why it’s Nominated: I love to be Magician’s Guild trilogy and have always intended to pick this one. After Becky’s recent raves about the author on her blog: Blogs–Of–A–Bookaholic, I’m more fired up than ever to finally read it.

10194494Title: False Memory

Suddenly her past doesn’t seem to matter… when there may not be a future.

Why it’s Nominated: I really enjoyed Planet Thieves, and I’m curious to see what he can do in his main series.

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card

Title: Ender’s Game

Author: Orson Scott Card

Series: Ender’s Saga #1

Genre: Science Fiction

A brilliant young boy, Andrew “Ender” Wiggin lives with his kind but distant parents, his sadistic brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anyone else, his sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were candidates for the soldier-training program but didn’t make the cut—young Ender is the Wiggin drafted to the orbiting Battle School for rigorous military training.

Why it’s Nominated: This one was nominated by one of my favorite followers who has exceptional taste in books. Even though I’ve already read this one, it was outstanding and I can’t think of a better time to reread it since the movie is right around the corner (also, it almost won last month).

1721141Title: Demons of the Ocean

Author: Justin Somper

Series: Vampirates #1

Genre: Middle Grade

Overview: Twins, Connor and Grace, never dreamed that there was any truth to the Vampirate shanty their father sang to them before he died, but that was before the two were shipwrecked and separated from each other. For Connor, who is taken aboard a pirate ship, there’s the chance to learn to swordfight, but for Grace, aboard a mysterious ship of vampire pirates, the danger is great. What will it take for them to find each other?

Why it’s Nominated: Let’s ignore the fact that for the longest time I thought this was a series about vampire rats, and rather focus on the compelling storyline. This is been on my shelf for at least ten years, and I think I’ve been saving it for rainy day… I’m tired of waiting. lol

13507967Title:

Author: Jacqueline Carey

Series: Agent of Hel #1

Genre: Urban Fantasy

Overview: The Midwestern resort town of Pemkowet boasts a diverse population: eccentric locals, wealthy summer people, and tourists by the busload; not to mention fairies, sprites, vampires, naiads, ogres and a whole host of eldritch folk, presided over by Hel, a reclusive Norse goddess. To Daisy Johanssen, fathered by an incubus and raised by a single mother, it’s home. And as Hel’s enforcer and the designated liaison to the Pemkowet Police Department, it’s up to her to ensure relations between the mundane and eldritch communities run smoothly. But when a young man from a nearby college drowns—and signs point to eldritch involvement—the town’s booming paranormal tourism trade is at stake. Teamed up with her childhood crush, Officer Cody Fairfax, a sexy werewolf on the down-low, Daisy must solve the crime—and keep a tight rein on the darker side of her nature. For if she’s ever tempted to invoke her demonic birthright, it could accidentally unleash nothing less than Armageddon.

Why it’s Nominated: Carey’s Kushiel’s series blew me away and I can hardly contain my excitement of her taking that same powerful writing and character development and apply it to an urban fantasy. Also, the second one (Autumn Bones) is coming out October 1 and I want to be ready for it!

12394100Title: Seraphina

Author: Rachel Hartman

Series: Seraphina #1

Genre: Teen Fantasy

Overview: Seraphina Dombegh has reason to fear both sides. An unusually gifted musician, she joins the court just as a member of the royal family is murdered—in suspiciously draconian fashion. Seraphina is drawn into the investigation, partnering with the captain of the Queen’s Guard, the dangerously perceptive Prince Lucian Kiggs. While they begin to uncover hints of a sinister plot to destroy the peace, Seraphina struggles to protect her own secret, the secret behind her musical gift, one so terrible that its discovery could mean her very life.

Why it’s Nominated: it is a teen fantasy about dragons… I don’t know how I could’ve possibly neglected to pick this one up before now.

10803121Title: Alloy of Law

Author: Brandon Sanderson

Series: Mistborn #4

Genre: Fantasy

Overview: Centuries after the Mistborn trilogy, Scadrial is on the verge of modernity – railroads, electric street lights, and skyscrapers. Waxillium Ladrian can Push on metals with his Allomancy and use Feruchemy to become lighter or heavier at will. After 20 years in the dusty Roughs, in the city of Elendel, the new head of a noble house may need to keep his guns.

Why it’s Nominated: I know a lot of people have read, and loved, the Mistborn trilogy. This latest continuation takes place in the distant future of the same world.

10874177Title: Etiquette and Espionage

Author: Gail Carriger

Series: Finishing School #1

Genre: Teen Fiction

Overview: It’s one thing to learn to curtsy properly. It’s quite another to learn to curtsy and throw a knife at the same time. Welcome to Finishing School.

Fourteen-year-old Sophronia is a great trial to her poor mother. Sophronia is more interested in dismantling clocks and climbing trees than proper manners—and the family can only hope that company never sees her atrocious curtsy. Mrs. Temminick is desperate for her daughter to become a proper lady. So she enrolls Sophronia in Mademoiselle Geraldine’s Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality. But Sophronia soon realizes the school is not quite what her mother might have hoped. At Mademoiselle Geraldine’s, young ladies learn to finish…everything. Certainly, they learn the fine arts of dance, dress, and etiquette, but they also learn to deal out death, diversion, and espionage—in the politest possible ways, of course. Sophronia and her friends are in for a rousing first year’s education.

Why it’s Nominated: I love books with schools, and a school for spies looks right up my alley.

 May the best book win!

Book Review: Sky Jumpers by Peggy Edelman

September 24, 2013

September 24, 2013

Title: Sky Jumpers

Author: Peggy Eddelman

Series: Sky Jumpers #1

Genre: Young Reader

Rating: 4/5 stars

The Overview: What happens when you can’t do the one thing that matters most? Twelve-year-old Hope Toriella lives in White Rock, a town of inventors struggling to recover from the green bombs of World War III. But Hope is terrible at inventing and would much rather sneak off to cliff dive into the Bomb’s Breath—the deadly band of compressed air that covers the crater left by the bombs—than fail at yet another invention. When bandits discover that White Rock has priceless antibiotics, they invade. Hope and her friends—Aaron and Brock—might be the only ones who can escape to make the dangerous trek through the Bomb’s Breath and over the snow-covered mountain. Inventing won’t help her make it through alive, but with Aaron and Brock’s help, the daring and recklessness that usually gets her into trouble might just save them all.

The Review:

Sky Jumpers is the perfect book to get your kids interested in futuristic (and somewhat dystopian) adventure stories – especially if they are a bit too young for Hunger Games and Divergent. Everything was perfectly engaging and exciting – from the great mission to save the valley to the trials of creating a good invention (my favorite part of the story – what fun!) and it was all just tame enough to be a good read for everybody.

As an adult reader (I use the term loosely), I found many things appealing: the overall concept, the atmosphere, and the characters. The only thing I could’ve used more of, at least in the beginning, was quicker pacing. The inciting incident didn’t take place until almost halfway through the book. Usually, that’s a big problem. In this case, it wasn’t totally detrimental to the story, but the book might’ve been stronger if it had more of a direction early on.

Here’s a couple of elements why, even without the inciting incident, I still really enjoyed the first half of the book: it had fun, engaging moments of mischief and great inner conflicts surrounding the main character. I really felt immersed into this girl’s world and her struggles to be a good daughter and a good inventor were more than enough to carry the story. Overall, it was a delightful read and one that I will definitely be suggesting to customers.

Recommended Reading: for anyone wanting to get absorbed in a fun adventure – especially those completely content picking up a middle grade book.

Stacking the Shelves – August Edition!

stalc

Let’s face it, I’m no longer at the point my life where I can just blow all my money on books (these days, I have to settle for half). Therefore, I only compile a Stacking the Shelves (hosted by Tynga’s Reviews) once a month rather than weekly. In July’s STS, I featured my adult library, this week figured I’d share my YA shelves:

IMG_3280

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve thinned out this collection to make room for new titles, but I think I finally reach the point where I can’t bear to get rid of anything else. The problem is, I’m completely out of room! I might have to try and convince my husband to sell the bed so we can fit more bookshelves. After all, our couch is pretty comfortable…

So now that you’ve seen the shelves I’m stacking, here’s a look at my new acquisitions this month:

Purchased:

IMG_3286

As you can see, I was on a bit of a science fiction kick this month. I originally purchased Leviathan Wakes as an e-book but liked it so much I decided to invest in the hardcopies. The Jack Campbell books were actually for my husband’s birthday, but I’m sure I will be reading them one day.

August 2013: Review Recap / ARC August Challenge

pink-heart-love-coffee-cup-pattern-facebook-cover 3

I read quite a few books this month, and a lot of them were ARCs for my ARC August challenge (see below). In fact, I read so many books that I didn’t have enough time in my blogging schedule to feature them all (the one’s I didn’t get to will be featured in next month’s recap).

Here’s a look at this month’s books:

And my favorite:

Dragon Keeper – 5/5 stars!

The Dragon Keeper

Statistically, I find this month fascinating. It has the lowest average rating so far this year, and I can’t help but think that it has something to do with the fact that I read mostly “obligation” books (Aka: books I read because I feel like I should). I made a deal with myself at the beginning of the year that I wouldn’t read anything because I felt like I had to – and you know what? It’s made for this single best year in reading I’ve ever had! The moral of the story? Don’t bog yourself down by mediocre books just because they are free. That’s not to say there aren’t some truly amazing titles available as ARCs, it just pays to be picky.

Now for the ARC August challenge recap:

ARC-August-Banner

I am super excited that Octavia at Read. Sleep. Repeat. hosted this challenge because it gave me the motivation I needed to work through all of my outstanding ARCs. I’m happy to say that of the original six I plan to read, I got through four of them… And then read four additional acquisitions to boot! I never thought I would be at this point, but I finally have my Net Galley ARCs down to just two books – and it’s going to stay that way this time (by the way, for this challenge I considered only current ARCs eligible… it’s incredibly sad how many past ones I never got to before their release dates)!

ARCs Read:

You can definitely see what kind of arcs draw my attention. The clear winner for my favorite arc read this month is: All Our Yesterdays! I haven’t officially written a review for it yet, but suffice to say it was a 5/5 star rating and one that I will be talking about for months – I loved it! Spirit Animals was a close second, and that review is also forthcoming.

Top Ten Tuesday–Top Ten Most Memorable Secondary Characters! (8/27/2013)

hhh 2 Top Ten Tuesday is a feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic celebrates our favorite sidekicks:

Top Ten Most Memorable Secondary Characters!

I’ve probably chosen a few who are considered main characters, so let’s say my criteria was that they were neither the main protagonist or love interest.

#1 Dead Witch Walking – Jenx: not only is this feisty, loyal pixie in my top ten, so are all of the side characters in this book.  Kim Harrison is the queen of side characters. They are all creative, memorable, and 100% entertaining – they honestly are what tips this series from great to amazing!

#2 Darkest Minds – Chubs: if you’ve read this series, I bet you haven’t forgotten about this character. He has such a lovable personality because it stems from a place that’s both loyal and compassionate. I would recommend this book for him alone.

#3 Harry Potter – All of Them: need I say more?

#4 Wizard’s First Rule –Cara: the mord-sith are a totally fascinating organization. Quite a bit sadistic, but it was one of my favorite moments in the series to watch one struggle to breakaway from their horrific way of life. I don’t believe Cara actually shows up until the second book…

#5 Hunger Games – Cinna: I think he was Katniss’s rock and the only person who didn’t demand anything from her. He always did his best by her and I think that’s why I love him most.

#6 Sword-Dancer – the horse: this beast was the most ornery animal, and reading about the main protagonist trying to get it to follow direction was hysterical. It’s been ten years and I still remember how funny that stupid horse was.

#7 Blood Engines – Rondeau: aside from the really cool concept surrounding this character, I thought he was an excellent counterpart to the main protagonist. This is yet another series where I enjoyed all of the side characters.

#8 Poison Study – Rosie: animals tend to make an impression on me, and no more so recently in this tiny little pig. She may not stick with me as long as some of the others on my list, but she sure deserves a shout out.

#9 Grimspace – The Ithtorian: this character was so delightfully alien that I’m not really sure how I managed to form such a fondness for him. You would think any one of the amazing human characters would’ve appealed to me more.

#0 Assassin’s Apprentice: The Fool: I dare say this character is my favorite on the list. After nine novels, I love this character but I’m sure there are still more things I could learn. His complexity blows my mind and I would be really sad if Hobb doesn’t bring him up again.

Now that the list is complete, I’m realizing that several of these books are in my all time favorites… Maybe side characters are more important than I initially thought. :-) My

Who are your memorable characters?
